DATA MANAGEMENT

In marketing materials, the processes of acquiring, conditioning, storing, administering, retrieving, distributing and archiving data are often referred to broadly as 'Information Management', 'Knowledge Management', 'Enterprise Resource Management', 'IT Management', and so forth, or referred to narrowly as 'Document Management', 'Data Mining', 'Data Warehousing' etc.

To us, all of these are within the term Data Management.

One way or another, whatever you call it, data must get from where it is and from the form it is in to where it is needed and in the form needed- in a timely fashion, and without corrupting the original data or compromising the generating application.

In it's simple form, Application "A" generates an output that is needed by management in the form of a report (regulatory filing, invoice, budget, balance sheet, and so on). This report is vital to some function of the organization (regulatory compliance, accounts receivable, competitive analysis, securing financing, winning a job, etc.)

Data management is the crafting of systems made up of procedures, tools and personnel to assure satisfaction of the need, and those who are effective and efficient in this prevail while those who are haphazard and wasteful do not.
